does my phone work in Israel? VoLTE, 4G and bad reception

Calls that won't connect, "no service", a signal that drops indoors. Most of the time the fix is a setting — and it takes two minutes.

The short answer

Israel has been switching off its old 2G and 3G networks. To make calls, your phone needs 4G with VoLTE switched on. Most phones from the last few years support it — you may just need to turn it on.

why some phones stop working in Israel

For years, phone calls ran on 2G and 3G. Israel has been moving everything to 4G and 5G, which are faster and better — but older phones, and some phones bought in other countries, can't make calls on the new networks without VoLTE. The result: internet works, but calls fail, or the phone shows "no service".

how to switch on VoLTE

iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular).
  3. Tap Mobile Data Options, then Voice & Data.
  4. Choose 4G/LTE or 5G Auto, and make sure VoLTE is on.

Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & Internet (or Connections).
  3. Tap Mobile network.
  4. Switch on VoLTE or 4G Calling.

5 quick fixes for bad reception

  • Restart your phone. It really does fix many problems.
  • Turn airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off — your phone searches for the best antenna again.
  • Check the network mode is set to 5G/4G, not 3G or 2G only.
  • Use one active SIM. Two SIMs at once can cause connection problems.
  • Move near a window. Thick walls, basements and metal roofs block signal.

buying a new phone? check first

Before you buy — here or abroad — make sure the phone supports 4G, VoLTE and ideally 5G on Israeli networks. Our phone-buying guide has a full checklist.

quick answers

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) lets your phone make calls over the 4G network. Because Israel has been switching off its old 2G and 3G networks, phones need VoLTE switched on to make calls reliably.

Open Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular) → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data, and choose 4G/LTE or 5G with "VoLTE" switched on.

Open Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → Mobile network, and switch on "VoLTE" or "4G Calling".

Some phones, especially older models or phones bought abroad, don't support VoLTE on Israeli networks. Send us your exact model on WhatsApp and we'll tell you whether it will work.
